Abrupt release of Ethiopian bloggers and journalists, an '#ObamaEffect'?

On the same day (July 8, 2015), and just few hours before this unexpected action which stunned the defendants; their attorney and the whole world, a story was running about jailed journalists Edom Kassaye under the title "An Ethiopian Journalist Jailed for Her Integrity". And a rumor surfaced on the social media around 7 o'clock (Ethiopian local time)  in the evening about the release of Edom Kassaye, Mahlet Fantahun, Asmamaw Hailegiorgis and Tesfalem Woldyes.

The mood was mixed among twitters: confusion, happiness, disbelief, suspicion just to mention but a few. Around 8 o'clock, the news was broken by wazema, an Ethiopian diaspora podcast in Sweden which is run by Mesfin Negash et. al. who was an ex managing editor of AddisNeger and convicted by Ethiopian government with terrorism charges.

However, there was no word from the government media until the next day. The government affiliated 'private' broadcaster Fana revealed that 'Five so-called bloggers in the Soliana Shimelis et-al case released in Ethiopia'.

Some were jubilant while others were cautious and skeptics of Ethiopian government's abrupt move which happened after the court has finished hearing evidences and was due to deliver a guilty-not-guilty verdict the coming week. Some even considered it as an 'Obama effect' where Ethiopian officials are in a preemptive charm-offensive ahead of US President's official visit to the country. It is to be recalled that a few days before this sudden action of the Ethiopian government, thousands of expat Ethiopians in the US made a huge protest in front of White-House demanding Barack Obama not visit Ethiopia.

If one dissects these various approaches, it appears that there are two main camps: pro-government groups on one side and the rest on the other side;the former is defending/justifying the Ethiopian government's action while family members and friends of the released/jailed bloggers and journalists; international media outlets; net-citizens and international human-rights and freedom of expression watchdogs who demand the government to release all Ethiopian prisoners of conscience. Members of the net-citizens continue to include the hash-tag #FreeZone9Bloggers in their social media posts and recommended others to do the same until everybody is free.

As result, #FreeZone9Bloggers, continued to be trending and has become the second largest hash-tag mentioned on twitter, at least here in Sweden.

In an exclusive with VOA Amharic, the released bloggers and journalists as well as father/attorney of columnist Reeyot Alemu expressed their mixed and shocking feelings towards the abrupt government's action. Zelalem Kibret a.k.a Zola said he has this survivor's guilt for being released because his four colleagues who were accused with the same charges still remain behind bars. A pro-government Facebooker replied to him in a cruel manner. 

“nobody is holding you back to go back [to the prison]. The food, the drinks and the rent are free. It's better for you there especially at this time when life is very expensive in the country.”

Meanwhile aigaforum, an Ethiopian diaspora pro-government media in the US made a complaint against CPJ (Committee to Protect Journalists) for taking sides with the groups which it alleges are terrorists not journalists.

Well, others are urging Mr. Obama to visit Ethiopia as often as possible so that all Ethiopian prisoners of conscience could be released.

According CPJ's latest reports, Ethiopia ranks the second journalists' jailer in Africa after to Eritrea and is listed among the top ten censored countries in the world. 
Our message, nobody is free until everybody is free! Free Eskinder Nega, Woubshet Taye, Abel Wabela, Befqadu Hailu, Atenaf Berhane, Andualem Aragae, Zelalem Werqalemahu and thousands Ethiopian prisoners of conscience who are being incarcerated for exercising their constitutional and birth-rights.

Jailed #FreeZone9Bloggers demands John Kerry to Stop Supporting Ethiopia

I first came to know about you back in 2004, during the US presidential election, when you were running for office against George Bush. At just 17 years old I knew little about US politics – or politics in general – but I discussed the campaigns with my schoolmates.
A year later, the historic 2005 Ethiopian national election took place. This election differed from previous votes in that the lead up to it was mostly democratic. This left many Ethiopians hoping they would witness the first elected change of government in the country’s history. But it was not to be.
After the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front realised they couldn’t win the election without rigging the vote, the true face of the regime emerged.

Evidence Against #FreeZone9Bloggers & Journalists Doesn’t Back Charges

(Bloomberg) -- Ethiopian prosecutors have failed to present evidence relating to charges that a group of bloggers and journalists support terrorism, a defense lawyer at the latest court hearing said.

Six members of the Zone 9 blogging group and three freelance journalists were charged in July at the Federal High Court in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, for working with banned organizations such as the U.S.-based Ginbot 7, which the Horn of Africa nation categorizes as a terrorist group. A witness on Wednesday testified that police last year collected a political manifesto from a Health Ministry office, where one of the defendants worked, lawyer Ameha Mekonnen said.
“No witness is brought who has either direct or indirect knowledge of the material element of the charge,” Ameha said in an interview. “The witnesses are here to prove that there was no maltreatment or pressure when the search was conducted.”

The defendants are the latest government critics to be tried under Ethiopia’s 2009 anti-terrorism law, which the U.S. has said is being used to criminalize legitimate dissent.

Ethiopian officials reject the accusation.
The manifesto collected was for a “peaceful” political party led by the author Lencho Lata, a former head of the rebel Oromo Liberation Front, Ameha said. All of the other evidence filed to the court by prosecutors is of a similar public nature, he said. Prosecutors will get a final chance to present witnesses when the trial resumes on May 26, Ameha said.

Ethiopia's imprisoned #FreeZone9bloggers have not been forgotten : BBC

In April 2014 BBC Trending covered the arrest of six bloggers and three journalists in Ethiopia. The bloggers are part of a group known as Zone 9, and are well known for campaigning around censorship and human rights issues in Ethiopia. Ten months on from their arrest, the hashtag #FreeZone9Bloggers continues to be used in the country as the trials continue.

That's not typical - campaigning hashtags often tail off over time. This one is being kept alive by activists both inside and out of Ethiopia who are challenging the government's decision. The total number of tweets is still only in the tens of thousands, but that is enough to be noticed on the global map (Twitter does not produce an official trending topics list for Ethiopia).

Why are they so focussed on social media? It certainly isn't the best way to reach the Ethiopian people: the internet is estimated to reach just over 1% of the population there. But it does allow them to network with the global blogging fraternity and the international media. Recently a blog began in support of the nine prisoners, and to report on the hearings. A campaign video has also been released in which complaints are raised over the conditions of Kalinto prison and Kality prison, where the bloggers are being held.

These complaints include torture, unlawful interrogation tactics and poor living conditions. The Ethiopian Embassy in London told BBC Trending that allegations of torture and unlawful interrogation tactics are unfounded, and that they have taken a series of measures "in collaboration with stakeholders, including civil society, to improve the conditions of prisons". They say the nine individuals are charged with "undermining the constitutional order, inciting violence and advocating the use of force to overthrow the legitimate government." They are also accused of working with an organisation proscribed by the Ethiopian Parliament as a terrorist organisation. However, activists in support of the group maintain that Zone 9's actions were constitutional.

Confessions of the Ex-‘Revo’: Befekadu Hailu

They are still indignant, confident and with unwavering devotion for human rights and the rule of law; the usual suspects, the one and the only ones- Zone9bloggers from the notorious Ethiopian prison still pen, criticize and inspire thousands regardless of the hardship they have to go through on a daily basis. I still couldn't believe this piece was written by someone who is being incarcerated for the crimes he didn't commit. Befqadu and his colleagues are critiquing the brutal and vengeful regime knowing that their shackles on their skinny arms and legs will be fastened harsh for such writings. I think, we are the ones who are in jail; THEY- the unbeatable young, fearless and innocent Ethiopians are sacrificing their lives to free us, AMEN!      

There was a time in my life when I used to think a lot about revolution in Ethiopia. In fact, in 2011 during the so called ‘Arab Spring’ I wrote a rejoinder article when Ethiopian democracy activists (especially those who are based in diaspora) planned a ‘Day of Rage’ using

ርዕሱን  አላስታውሰውም ‘ንጂ እ.ኤ.አ በ2011 Arab Uprising በመባል የሚታወሰውን አብዮትተከትሎ፣ ኢትዮጵያውያን ፌስቡከኞችም (በተለይ ዲያስፖራ የሚገኙ) ግንቦት 20 ላይ (ልክ በኢሕአዴግ የ20ኛ አገዛዝ ዕድሜ)   “Anger day” በሚል በፌስቡክ አብዮትመጥራታቸውን ተቃውሜ አንዲት ጽሑፍ ጽፌ ነበር፡፡ በዓመቱ ደግሞ ‹‹ አብዮት ወረት ነው›› በሚል ርዕስ በፌስቡክ አብዮት ለማስነሳት ፍላጎት ያላቸው በርካቶች እንዳሉ ገልጬ ነገር ግን ይጎድላቸዋል የሚባሉትንነገሮች ዘርዝሬ ጽፌ ነበር፡፡ በነዚህ ሁለት ጽሑፎች ላይ፣ ላዩን አብዮትን የተቃወምኩ ቢመስልም እውነታው ግን ጽሑፎቹ በተጻፉበትወቅት ሕዝቡም፣ ተቃዋሚ ልሂቃኑም፣ ሁኔታዎቹም ለአብዮት ዝግጁ አይደሉም የሚል ዝንባሌ ማሳየቱ ነበር፡፡

ከሌላ ዓመት በኋላደግሞ ‹‹ስለለውጥ›› በሚል ርዕስ ተከታታይ ጽሑፎችን በ‹‹ዞን 9›› ላይ በግል ተነሳሽነት ማስፈር ጀምሬ ነበር፡፡ ጽሑፉን የጀመርኩት ‹‹ኢሕአዴግ ሥልጣኑን በምርጫ ይለቃል?›› በሚል ጥያቄ ነበር፡፡ ‹‹አይለቅም›› የምልባቸውን ምክንያቶች ካስቀመጥኩ በኋላ የለውጥ አማራጭ የምላቸውን (አብዮት፣ሰላማዊ አለመታዘዝ /civil disobedience/ የመሳሰሉትን) በየዘርፉ እየቀነጫጨብኩ ለማሳየት ነበር ዓላማዬ ከዚያም ‹‹የለውጥ ፍርሃት››፣ ‹‹የሥርዓት ለውጥ እና ሃይማኖት››፣ ‹‹የ1966ቱ የኢትዮጵያ አብዮት እና የማኅበራት ሚና›› የሚሉ ርዕሶችን በማንሳት በሐሳቦቹ ላይ በሐቀኝነት ለመከራከር ጥረት አድርጌያለሁ (ከዚህ በላይ አልገፋሁበትም እንጂ)፡፡ በበኩሌ ስለአብዮት በደንብ ያነበብኩትም፣ ያሰብኩትም፣ የጻፍኩትም፣ የተረዳሁትም ያኔ ነበር፡፡ ያኔ በአብዮት ላይ የነበረኝ እምነት ተሸርሽሮ ግማሽ ደርሶ ነበር፡፡ ተንጠፍጥፎ ያለቀው ግን

ክሶቼ የቅጣት ጣሪያቸው እስከ ሞት ድረስ ነው። በእስር ላይ የሚገኘው የህግ መምህሩ እና ጦማሪው ዘላለም ክብረት

ብርቅዬው የኢትዮጵያ ልጅ ዘላለም ክብረት እግር ተወርች እየማቀቀ ከሚገኝበት እስርቤት ስለእስሩ፡ስለአሳሪዎቹ እና በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ያሉት የህግ አስፈጻሚዎች፡ ተርጓሚዎች (ለመሆኑ ግን ህግ የሚባለው ነገርስ አለ) እና  ሌሎች ባለጊዜዎች የህጎች ሁሉ የበላይ ህግ ነው የሚባለውን ህገመንግስት በመጣስ በእሱ እና በሌሎች በሺህ የሚቆጠሩ ኢትዮጵያውን ወገኖች ላይ የሚፈጽሙትን ለህሊና የሚዘገንን ድርጊት ለሁለተኛ ጊዜ በከተበው ሃያል ብእሩ እነሆ  ብሎናል። ከዘላለም ደብዳቤ ምን ያህል የመንፈስ ጥንካሬ እና ለሰው ልጆች መብት መከበር ያለውን  ተጋድሎ እና  እስርቤት እንኳን ሆኖ  ገዢዎቻችን  የጤፍ ቅንጣት ያህል እንደማይፈራቸው ለመገንዘብ  ይቻላል። ሌላው በጣም  ዘላለምን ልዩ  የሚያደርገው እንደዚያ ባለ አሰቸጋሪ ሁኔታ ላይ ሆኖ የደረሱበትንና እየደረሱበት ያሉትን ኢሰብዓዊ በደሎች እያዋዛ በመጻፍ ለተደራሲ ማቅረብ መቻሉ ነው።   የዘላለም የህግ እና  የሰብዓዊ መብቶች እውቀት በስልጣን ላይ ያለው መንግስት በዜጎቹ ላይ እየፈጸመ ያለውን ቅጥ ያጣ የሰብዓዊ መብት ረገጣ ርቃኑን አውጥቶታል። በዚህም የተነሳ ይህ በቀለኛ  መንግስት ዘላለምን ለወራት እንዲያም ሲል ለዓመታት እንደ እነ እስክንድር ነጋ፡ ርዕዮት ዓለሙ፡ በቀለ ገርባ እና ሌሎችም እንዲማቅቅ  እንደሚፈርድበት ሳይታለም የተፈታ ነው።

ወዳጄ ልቤ ከቶ እንደምንድን ነሽ? እውን እኔና አንቺ በአለም ስንኖር ሌላ የመገናኛ ዘዴ አጥተን ወደ snail mail እንመላለሳለን ብለሽ አስበሽ ታውቂያለሽ? ለማንኛውም እንዲህ ሆነ፡፡ ጥጋበኛ ሰው ያስቀናኝ ጀምሮልሻል፣ ጥጋበኛ እንዲህ የሚለው ትዝ አለኝ፡፡

የደላው! ቢያሻው በደብዳቤ፣ ሲፈልግ በአካል እያማረጠ እኮ ነው፡፡ ለእኔ አሁን ባለሁበት ሁኔታ ሁለቱም ቅንጦት ነው (ወይ ደብዳቤው አይደርስሽም ወይም አንቺን ማየቴ ሊገደብ ይችላል)፡፡ ቆይ ትንሽ የጎን ወሬ ላዋራሽና ምክንያቱን እነግርሻለሁ፡፡ ‹‹አንቺ›› ተብለሽ በዚህ ደብዳቤ ስለተጠቀስሽው ‹‹አንቺ››ና ይሄን ደብዳቤ ለሚያነቡ ወዳጆች የዕምነት ክህደት ቃሌን በትንሹ ላስፍር፡፡

Ethiopian Court Denies Bail to 3 Journalists & 6 #FreeZone9Bloggers: RSF

Reporters Sans Fronetiers (RSF), one of the International Freedom of Expression watchdogs disclosed this today following yesterday's orchestrated trial held in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa. Since the prosecutor couldn't corroborate the fabricated charges against these innocent citizens who did nothing but exercised birthrights, it repeats the two decades tradition by denying bail and adjourning the trial for the 8th times. Here's the details of RSF's reportage about the "hearing".   

Three journalists and six bloggers who have been held for the past five months were denied bail by a federal court in Addis Ababa yesterday after the prosecution argued that article 3 of the 2009 anti-terrorism law, under which they are detained, precludes release on bail.

The defence said article 3’s bail prohibition does not apply because none of them has been individually charged with a specific crime under the anti-terrorism law. The defence also argued that article 3 violates the constitutional guarantee of the right to release on bail.

It shows not only her translation skill but also her unparalleled devotion to the freedom of expression, and above all her care for thousands of fellow Ethiopians who are being incarcerated for the crimes they didn't commit. Befqadu also should be commended for penning this very troubling and obvious account under such brutal circumstances where he, other members of Zone 9 bloggers, journalists, opposition party leaders and their followers have to go through everyday and night in present day Ethiopia. What Befqadu wrote is not something new, however it helps to open our eyes about the alarming situation with regard to the human-rights abuses in Ethiopia especially against those under police custody. The Ethiopian government denied and is still denying all these allegations, even though firsthand experiences by the likes of Befqadu and research documents by other human-rights watchdogs reveal these broad-light gross abuses against innocent and unarmed Ethiopians who did nothing but exercised their constitutional and birthrights. I hope, one day all the culprits of these heinous crimes will be brought to justice and eventually innocent victims of this brutal system will be freed. Later on, after I was allowed to meet with my "collaborators" according to my prisoners and asked each other, we found out we were all asked this same question “what do you think is your crime”? This describes the overall outcome of our interrogation. Since they couldn’t figure out what our supposed crime was or what law we were suspected of violating, we were asked

Cases of Zone9 Bloggers & Journalists referred to the Court in the Absence of both the Defendants & their Lawyer

The first instance court of Arada bench was expected to wrap up the pre-trial ‘hearing’ which took more than 70 days and yet the bloggers were not even brought before the judge. Mr.Amaha Mekonnen, a lawyer defending the bloggers & journalists who are detained on unclear but shaping up to be on terrorism charges expected the first instance court at Arada bench to rest the pre-trial procedure last Saturday. The court had set the 12th July hearing for closing arguments but with an extraordinary move the police referred the case to the Federal High Court without even the presence of neither the defendants nor their defense lawyer himself. The shift overlooked the court and contravenes even the standard procedure of the biased justice system. The lawyer speaks to Dawit Solomon, a journalist based in Addis Ababa about the issue. Here are the translated excerpts from the interview.

DAWIT: What were your thoughts on your way to the court for Saturday’s procedure?

AMAHA: I expected the police might demand for more time to wrap up their interrogation as usual. I also sought to see how the court would reply to this repeated claim of the police. Nevertheless, to the shock of me and all people who were here what unfolded was really baffling. Since the detainees were not brought to the court some journalists went straight to the court’s registrar to ask about the case. Then a person who claimed himself as “the detective” of the case told the journalists since he is done with the interrogation he submitted the case for a prosecutor. He further claimed that the case is closed. This was what I was told by the journalists then I also went in to verify which I found it true. They closed the case without the presence of neither my clients nor me who is representing them.

DAWIT: What action have you taken after you heard?

AMAHA: We have been to court’s compound way earlier than the scheduled time of the hearing. When the detectives/police officers presented their arguments it should be in our presence. I have tried to explain our disappointment to the judge. This is basically a grave breach of law.

DAWIT: So what is the encroachment? Where is the breach of the law?

ሁለት ወር ከሃይ ቀናት በእስር ያሳለፉት ስድስቱ ጦማርያን እና ሶስቱ ጋዜጠኞች በሶስት የጊዜ ቀጠሮ መዝገብ፡በሰንበት ሲመላለሱ ከርመው ትናንት ቅዳሜ በሌሉበት መዝገቡ ለዓቃቤ ህግ መተላለፉን በቦታው ተገኝታ የነበረችው ጋዜጠኛ ጽዮን ግርማ ዘገበች። ሃምሌ ዓምስት ተቀጥረው የነበሩት ጋዜጠኞች ተስፋለም፡ወልደየስ፡ አስማማው ኃይለጊዮርጊስ፡ኤዶም፡ካሳዬ እና የህግ መምህር እና የዞን ዘጠኝ ጦማሪ ዘልዓለም ክብረት፡ እንዲሁም የዞን ዘጠኝ ጦማርያን ናትናኤል ፈለቀና አጥናፉ ብርሃነ፡በአጠቃላይ ስድስቱ ተጠርጣሪዎች ፍርድቤት ይቀርባሉ ተብሎ እስከ ጠዋቱ አምስት ሰዓት ተኩል ድረስ ሲጠብቅ የነበረው ችሎት ተከታታይ በመጨረሻም ችሎቱ ማብቃቱ ተነግሮታል። ቆይታው ግራ ያጋባቸው፡ጠበቃው አቶ አመሃ መኮንን ሁኔታውን ለማጣራት ችሎት፡ገብተው ሲጠይቁ፡ "ውይ አለቀኮ"፡ የሚል ምላሽ ተሰጥቷቸዋል። "እዚህ ውጭ ቁጭ ብለን እየጠበቅን እንዴት ነው አለቀ የሚባለው"፡ ብለው ላነሱት ጥያቄም "ስንጠራችሁ፡ አልሰማችሁም፡ የሚል ምላሽ ተሰጥቷቸዋል"። "ግቢ፡ውስጥ ከሶስት መቶ ሰው በላይ ተቀምጦ የእነርሱን ጉዳይ እየጠበቀ፡ጠበቃቸው እዚህ እያለ እንዴት፡አልሰማችሁም ይባላል" ብለው ቢጠይቁም ጠበቃ አይስፈልጋችውም ነበር። የሚል ምላሽ ተሰጥቷቸዋል። "ተጠርጣሪዎቹስ መች ቀረቡ?" ብለው ሲጠይቁም "እነርሱ አይስፈልጉም ነበር፡ ፖሊስ ይህን መዝገብ ዘግቼ፡ጉዳዩን ለዓቃቤ ህግ፡ አስተላልፊያለሁ አለ። በዛ መሰረት መዝገቡ ተዘጋ" በማለት ምላሽ ሰጡት።

የጦማሪው ማስታወሻ ለ78 ቀናት እና ማእልታት ምንም ዓይነት ክስ ሳይመሰርትባቸው የጓንታናሞ ታናሽ በሆነው ማእከላዊ እስርቤት የሚንገላቱት የኢትዮጵያ ተስፋዎች፡ ህይወት ላይ የምትጫወቱ ዳኛ፡ፓሊስና አቃቤህግ ተብዬዎች፡ታሪክ ፍርዱን ይሰጣችኋል። የትናንትናው የዞን9 ጦማርያን እና ጋዜጠኞች ጉዳይ የፍርድቤት ውሎ ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ አለ የሚባለው የህግ ስርዓት፡ ለእነማን እና በእነማን ጠለላ ስር እንድሆነ ለ101ኛ ጊዜ ፍንትው ብሎ ያሳያል። እነ ጠቅላይ ምኒስትር  ደሳላኝ ሃይለማርያም  አለ የሚሉን ህግ ተርጓሚ እና አስፈጻሚ ሚና እንዲህ ተደበላልቆ ትርጉም ያጣበት ጊዜ ላይ መድረሳችን፡ የዚህች አገር እጣ ፈንታ ከድጡ ወደማጡ   እያዘገመ  መሆኑን :ጥሩ አመላካች ነው።

የዞን ዘጠኝ ጦማሪያን እና የሶስቱ ኢትዮጵያውያን ጋዜጠኞች የቅዳሜና እሁድ ውሎ በህውሃት የካንጋሩ ፍርድቤት

ጋዜጠኛ ጽዮን ግርማ በአራዳ ምድብ ችሎት በአካል በመገኘት እንደዘገበችው እንደዘገበችው  በዛሬው እለት የተከናወነው   የፍርድ  ቤት ድራማ ያው ህውሃት እንደለመደው በፍቃዱ ሃይሉ ማህሌት ፋንታሁን እና አቤል ዋበላ ላይ ፖሊስ ከትላንትናው ጋር ተመሳሳይ የሆነ የ28 ቀን ጊዜ ቀጠሮ የጠየቀ ቢሆንም ፍርድ ቤቱ 14 ቀን ፈቅዶለታል፡፡ፖሊስ የጸረ ሽብር አዋጁን በመጥቀስ በሽብር ክስ ለማቅረብ ስላሰበ 28 ቀን እንዲሰጠው የጠየቀ ቢሆንም ዳኛው ያለምንም የተለየ ተጨማሪ ነገር ከመነሻ ጥርጣሬ ለመቀየር ፖሊስ አሳማኝ ምክንያት ባለማቅረቡ 14 ቀን ተጨማሪ የምርመራ ጊዜ ብቻ ፈቅደዋል። የዛሬውን ውሎ ለየት የሚያደርገው፡ ፖሊስ የታሳሪዎቹ ቤተሰቦች እና ወዳጆችን እንዳያለቅሱ፡ለታሳሪዎቹ እጃቸውን 

እንዳያውለበልቡ እና ምንም ዓይነት ምስል በፍርድቤቱ ቅጥር ግቢ ውስጥ እንዳያነሱ/እንዳይቀርጹ መከልከሉ የአፈናውን 

መጠነሰፊነት ያሳያል። ይህንን ጉዳይ በተመለከተ በትዊተር ላይ ዜጎች በሚከተለው መልኩ ቁጣቸው እና ሮሮአቸውን ሲገልጹ ነበር።

የዞን 9 ጦማርያንን የጊዜ ቀጠሮ ሊያይ በተሰየመው ችሎት ዛሬ ሌላ አሰቃቂ ዜና አብሮ ሰምቷል፡፡ ሁለቱ የዞን9 አባላት በፍቃዱ ሃይሉና አቤል ዋበላ በማእከላዊ እስርቤት ፖሊሶች መመታታቸውን እና ውስጥ እግራቸው ላይ ግርፋት እንደተፈጸመባቸው የገለጹ ሲሆን ፓሊስ ማስረጃ የላቸውም ሲል ተከራክሯል፡፡ ለክርክሩ ምላሽም ውስጥ እግራቸውን ለፍርድ ቤቱ ማሳየት እንደሚችሉ ተናግረዋል፡፡ ፍርድ ቤቱ ቶርቸር ህግ መንግስታዊ አይደለም ሲል "አስተያየቱን" ሰጥቷል፡፡ እንደትላንትናው ሁሉ በተመሳሳይ ምክንያቶች የተነሳ ተጨማሪ የጊዜ ቀጠሮ የተጠየቀባቸው ሲሆን ፍርድ ቤቱ ተጨማሪ 10 ቀናትን ለምርመራ ፈቅዷል፡፡

በዛሬው የፍርድ ቤት ውሎ ለተከሳሾቹ ጭብጨባ እና ፉጨት ማሰማት የተከለከለ ሲሆን ተከሳሾች ሲወጡ ባሳዩት አጋርነትም ከዛሬ በኋላ ካጨበጨባችሁ እንዳትገቡ እናደርጋለን የሚል ማስፈራሪያም ተሰጥቷል፡፡ ወ/ ሮ ስንታየሁ የተባሉ የሬጅስትራር ሰራተኛ ጭብጨባውን እና ፉጨቱን ለዳኛ በመንገር (በተለመደ ቋንቋ በማቃጠር) አጋርነት እያሳዩ የነበሩትን ወጣቶች ተግባር ለማስቆም ሞክረዋል፡፡

በድጋሚ የዞን 9 አባላት  የወሰዷቸው ምንም አይነት የአሸባሪነት ስልጠና እንደሌለ እያረጋገጡ በህገ መነግስቱ አንቀጽ 18 መሰረት ማንኛውም ሰው ጭካኔ የተሞላበት ኢሰብአዊ  በሆነ መንገድ ክብሩን ከሚያዋርድ አያያዝ ወይም ቅጣት የመጠበቅ መብት አለው ቢልም በታሰሩ አባላቶቻችን ላይ የደረሰውን ግርፋት አጥብቆ ያወግዛል፡፡

Ethiopia file Charges against #FreeZone9Bloggers, Journalists detained over the Weekend

Charges were brought against a group of bloggers writing for Zone9 and three journalists detained by security forces on Friday April 25^th and Saturday April 26^th.  

Friends of the detainees were told this morning at the Ma’ekelawi, the central investigation office where the detainees were are kept since Friday that charges were already filed against the detainees on Sunday April 27^th. According to journalist Lily Yekoye,

Security forces arrest six bloggers and a journalist in latest crackdown on opposition voices.

 

The Ethiopian government has arrested six independent bloggers and a journalist in what human rights group Amnesty International has called a "suffocating grip on freedom of expression".

Six members of independent blogger and activist group ‘Zone 9’ and a prominent Ethiopian journalist were arrested on Friday in the capital Addis Ababa.

All six bloggers were arrested at night by armed security forces and taken from their homes to the Federal Police Crime Investigation Sector ‘Maikelawi’, where political prisoners are alleged to be held in pre-trial, and sometimes arbitrary detention.

The Zone 9 group who are said to be very
