IS shows purported executions in Libya of Ethiopia Christians

Image grab taken on April 19, 2015 from a video reportedly released by the Islamic State group purportedly shows men described as Ethiopian Christians captured in Libya kneeling in front of masked militants before their beheading on a beach in LibyaThe Islamic State group on Sunday released a video purportedly showing the execution of some 30 Ethiopian Christians captured in Libya.
The 29-minute IS video purports to show militants holding two groups of captives, described in text captions as "followers of the cross from the enemy Ethiopian Church".
A masked fighter in black brandishing a pistol makes a statement threatening Christians if they do not convert to Islam.
The video then switches between footage of one group of about 12 men being beheaded by masked militants on a beach and another group of at least 16 being shot in the head in a desert area.
It was not immediately clear who the captives were or how many were killed.
Before the killings, the video shows purported footage of Christians in Syria, saying they had been given the choice of converting to Islam or paying a special tax, and had decided to pay.
The video bore the logo of the IS media arm and was similar to past footage released by the jihadists, including of 21 Coptic Christians beheaded on a Libyan beach in February.
Feeding on the political chaos and unrest that has wracked Libya since the 2011 uprising that toppled dictator Moamer Kadhafi, several Libyan jihadist groups have pledged allegiance to IS.
Almost two-thirds of Ethiopians are Christians, mostly Orthodox Copts, who say they have been in the Horn of Africa nation since the first century AD.
There are also large numbers of protestants.
Ethiopia is Africa's second largest nation in terms of population, but large numbers of its more than 90 million people travel abroad to work in menial jobs so they can send money home.
Many go to Libya, using the North African nation as a stepping stone for the perilous crossing to Europe.

More Than 200 Migrants Feared Dead After Boats Sink in Mediterranean

By VICE News
February 11, 2015 | 1:16 pm
More than 200 migrants are missing in the Mediterranean sea after the motorboats they were traveling in sank, the UN refugee agency says.
Nine people were saved after four days at sea, but a further 203 were "swallowed up," Carlotta Sami, the UNHCR spokeswoman in Italy, said on Twitter.
She called the incident a "horrible and enormous tragedy."
The two boats departed from the Libyan coast on Saturday, according to the International Organization for Migration.
Lauren Jolles, UNHCR officer for Southern Europe, criticised Operation Triton — Europe's Mediterranean border patrol — for lacking a "core mandate" of saving human lives.
"We are shocked by the news of the death of another 203 migrants and refugees," she said in a statement.
She added: "The Operation Triton does not have as its core mandate of saving human lives and therefore can not be the answer of which is urgently needed."
Triton was brought into replace Operation Mare Nostrum, the Italian government's program of maritime patrols, which ended last year to warnings from refugee experts that the death toll could soar. The EU operation, run by the bloc's border agency Frontex, covers a much reduced search area and is mandated with border surveillance rather than search and rescue.
Nils Muiznieks, human rights commissioner of the Council of Europe, also denounced Triton's inadequacy, saying the loss of life could have been avoided.
The news comes just days after 29 migrants died after their inflatable raft capsized near the Italian island of Lampedusa. 22 of those died from hypothermia after being picked up by a rescue vessel.
More than 165,000 undocumented migrants tried to cross the Mediterranean to Europe in the first nine months of 2014, accroding to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, compared with 60,000 for the whole of 2013. Almost half of the 2014 migrants were Syrians and Eritreans.
At least 3,000 died or went missing at sea in 2014, according to UNCHR estimates, compared to over 600 in 2013.

Nearly 3,500 Migrants reportedly died in 2014 alone while crossing the Mediterranean: UNHCR

GENEVA (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency on Wednesday warned that the international community was losing its focus on saving lives amid confusion among coastal nations and regional blocs over how to respond to the growing number of people making risky sea journeys in search of asylum or migration.
Group  risking their lives to reach Europe from North Africa
With preparations under way for the opening today in Geneva of UNHCR's 2014 High Commissioner's Dialogue – an informal policy discussion forum whose focus this year is "Protection at Sea" – UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres said some governments were increasingly seeing keeping foreigners out as being a higher priority than upholding asylum.
"This is a mistake, and precisely the wrong reaction for an era in which record numbers of people are fleeing wars," Guterres said. "Security and immigration management are concerns for any country, but policies must be designed in a way that human lives do not end up becoming collateral damage."
The clandestine nature of these sea crossings makes reliable comparisons with previous years difficult, but available data points to 2014 being a record high. According to estimates from coastal authorities and information from confirmed interdictions and other monitoring, at least 348,000 people have risked such journeys worldwide since the start of January. Historically, a principal driver has been migration, but this year the number of asylum-seekers involved has grown.
Europe, facing conflicts to its south (Libya), east (Ukraine) and south-east (Syria/Iraq) is seeing the largest number of sea arrivals. Although not all are people needing asylum, more than 207,000 people have crossed the Mediterranean since the start of January – almost three times the previous known high of about 70,000 in 2011, when the Libyan civil war was in full swing. For the first time, people from refugee-producing countries (mainly Syria and Eritrea) have in 2014 become a major component in this tragic flow, accounting for almost 50 per cent of the total.
In addition to the Mediterranean, there are at least three other major sea routes in use today both by migrants and people fleeing conflict or persecution. In the Horn of Africa region 82,680 people crossed the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea in the first 11 months of this year en route mainly from Ethiopia and Somalia to Yemen or onwards to Saudi Arabia and the countries of the Persian Gulf.
In Southeast Asia, an estimated 54,000 people have undertaken sea crossings so far in 2014, most of them departing from Bangladesh or Myanmar and heading to Thailand, Malaysia or Indonesia. In the Caribbean, at least 4,775 people are known to have taken to boats in the first 11 months, hoping to flee poverty or in search of asylum.
And many die or fall victim to international organized crime in the process of making these journeys. Worldwide, UNHCR has received information of 4,272 reported deaths this year. This includes 3,419 on the Mediterranean – making it the deadliest route of all. In Southeast Asia, an estimated 540 people have died in their attempts to cross the Bay of Bengal.
In the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, at least 242 lives had been lost by December 8, while in the Caribbean the reported number of dead or missing as of the start of December was 71. People smuggling networks are meanwhile flourishing, operating with impunity in areas of instability or conflict, and profiting from human desperation.
Guterres said that by focusing on isolated elements to a problem that by its nature is multi-layered and transnational – often involving routes that stretch across multiple borders and over thousands of kilometres – governments were finding themselves unable to either stem the flow or stop people dying along the journey.
"You can't stop a person who is fleeing for their life by deterrence, without escalating the dangers even more," said Guterres. "The real root causes have to be addressed, and this means looking at why people are fleeing, what prevents them from seeking asylum by safer means, and what can be done to crack down on the criminal networks that prosper from this, while at the same time protecting their victims. It also means having proper systems to deal with arrivals and distinguish real refugees from those who are not."
This year's High Commissioner's Dialogue gathers representatives of governments, non-governmental organisations, coast guard and, academics as well as representatives from partner international organisations. It is being held in Geneva's Palais des Nations over today and Thursday.

Nearly 40,000 Eritreans risked their lives to reach Europe by boat only this year: UNHCR

GENEVA, November 14 (UNHCR) The UN refugee agency on Friday said the number of asylum-seekers in Europe from Eritrea over the first 10 months of this year has risen threefold compared to the same period in 2013. In Ethiopia and Sudan, neighboring Eritrea, the number of Eritrean refugees has also increased sharply.
"So far this year, nearly 37,000 Eritreans have sought refuge in Europe, compared to almost 13,000 during the same period last year. Most asylum requests have been lodged in Sweden, Germany and Switzerland, with the vast majority of the Eritreans having arrived by boat across the Mediterranean," UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards told journalists in Geneva.
"Our office in Italy reports that 22 per cent of the people arriving by boat are Eritrean, a total of nearly 34,000 people this year. This makes Eritreans the second

Libya another hell-hole for African Migrants

"If an African dies here, it is normal. No one cares". 24 years-old Nigerian migrant
"A male officer stripped me off to check out if I hide cellphone in my private parts". Pregnant woman
I heard several horrific stories from Ethiopians and Eritreans who had stayed in Libya as a transit before they moved to Europe but I never expected these level of xenophobic and racist abuses fellow Africans including children and women just because they happen to have a bit higher melanin than the local Libyans. A report which was released today by Amnesty International shows these defenseless and helpless people are being abused, degraded, beaten, raped and killed by local self-proclaimed militias who claim to protect Libyan women from rape and their country from witchcraft. Oh no, how would a 15 years old girl

Ethiopian Returnees from Saudi-Arabia Recount their Horriffic Ordeals

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has repatriated over 350 Ethiopian migrants from Saudi-Arabia over the past few weeks. Three of these returnees told their horrific ordeals in Saudi Arabia to Abebayehu Gebyaw of Ethiopia's Amharic weekly AddisAdmas. Here's the translation of the Amharic version which was published on November, 18/2013.
I'd never go back [to Saudi], even if they say a gold is raining there”, Abdu Indris.
Ethiopians are being incarcerated in Saudi prisons”, Indris Mohammed.
They [Saudis] consider Abeshas (alternative term for Ethiopians) as cheap commodity.”, Indris Yousuf.

Ethiopian Migrants Victimized in Saudi Arabia (GRAHAM PEEBLES)

In the last 10 days persecution of Ethiopian migrant workers in Saudi Arabia has escalated. Men and women are forced from their homes by mobs of civilians and dragged through the streets of Riyadh and Jeddah. Distressing videos of Ethiopian men being mercilessly beaten, kicked and punched have circulated the Internet and triggered worldwide protests by members of the Ethiopian diaspora as well as outraged civilians in Ethiopia. Women report being raped, many repeatedly, by vigilantes and Saudi police. Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT), has received reports of fifty

Infograhpics about Violence against Ethiopian Migrant Workers in the Middle-East from 1999-2013

The following graphics shows the various types of violence (rape, involuntary servitude, murder, assault, battery, suicide, physical abuse, etc) against Ethiopian migrant workers in the Middle-eastern countries from October 1999 - October 2013. This is just the tip of the iceberg; 86 cases were verified and approved so far but this data doesn't include hundreds if not thousands of nameless, faceless Ethiopians who had lost their lives, crippled, deformed, raped disappeared and imprisoned in various prisons of Oil & gas rich countries. Courtesy of this data is to domestichelpabuse.com  I'd like to thank them for their well researched and detailed data at this critical time where the lives of our compatriots are being at stake in the middle-eastern countries especially Saudi-Arabia. This infographics is very interactive and includes various inputs such as descriptions of the violence (name of the victims, the country where they were abused, time, date and year of the violence etc). There is a small button on the right side next to the the first legend where you can drag it or click the backward and forwards buttons to read details of the abuses. You can sort the information which you want to see by clicking on the legends on the right-hand side or by clicking on the maps and then choose to filter the data you want to explore. Please share this info and spread the word about this barbaric crimes against defenseless and helpless Ethiopians in the middle-east so that the world to act and safeguard the well-being of our citizens. If you have questions regarding this infographics, please don't hesitate to send them via e-mail or write them on the comment section at the bottom of this post.

TPLF shuts down Ethiopia's Consulate in Riyadh when Desperate Citizens Needs It More

Saudi-Arabia, one of the major destinations for millions of desperate migrant workers from Asia and Africa, intensified its war against Ethiopians over the past weeks. Saudi's security police and the Shabab (youth) vigilantes are on rampage killing, torturing, raping, imprisoning and starving these helpless and defenseless Ethiopians. Large numbers of Ethiopians were killed, kidnapped, tortured and unaccounted for over the couple of days, since the Saudi government started rounding off undocumented migrant workers. Against this background Ethiopia's Riyadh consulate announced yesterday that it was shut down indefinitely. This is how much the rulers at Arat killo Palace cared and concerned about their powerless nationals whose safety and security is at stake. Thousands of these compatriots lack papers to stay in Saudi and/or repatriate back home; the consulate added salt to their wounds by abandoning them in the hands of heartless and barbaric Saudi police and its militia. If this is not treason, then what would be? The women in the following video were kidnapped and are being gang-raped by twenty Saudi  men who killed their

Ethiopians in Sweden outraged over Violence against Migrant Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia

Over 300 Ethiopians who reside in Sweden went to street today here in Stockholm, to express their anger and sadness over the recent killings, rape and arbitrary detention of migrant Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia. The 2 hours protest took place in front the Saudi Embassy in the afternoon and the demonstrators urged the Saudi government to stop the unprecedented violence and abuse which mainly target innocent Ethiopian migrant workers in that country. The protesters were chanting slogans such as 'shame on you'; 'we need justice'; 'stop raping our sisters'; 'stop killing our sisters and brothers' among others. Saudi Embassy officials refused to accept a letter which was prepared by the organizers to be submitted to the Saudi King. Ethiopians who allegedly don't have residence/work permit have been rounded up and are now concentrated in the desert. The atrocity against Ethiopians detained in different concentration camps in Saudi Arabia has been going on for the past five days by security authorities and vigilantes who took the law into their hands. Two Ethiopians have been allegedly killed yesterday during a scuffle of separating a husband and wife. The Ethiopian government which is supposed to protect the security and safety of Ethiopians at home and abroad has done little or nothing to stop the ongoing violence against its thousands of citizens in the middle-eastern countries. Even though, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed the violence against Ethiopians toned down after discussion with its Saudi counterparts, Ethiopians who reside in the petrol-rich country refuted this claim as baseless and intended to repair the damage. Some of these Ethiopians who are themselves in the various concentration camps in Saudi deserts told Ethiopian Satellite TV (ESAT) that, neither the government nor the Ethiopian Embassy in Saudi doing nothing to rescue their lives and bring them home safely.
