Ana Gomes, a Portuguese by birth but a true friend of the oppressed Ethiopians, who was hated and banned entry to Ethiopia by the late prime minster & co because of her brutally honest critic as an observer of the bloody & rigged Ethiopia's 2005 election which resulted in the arbitrary killings of over 190 innocent protesters by the regime. Eight years later, Gomes was back to attend in the just concluded 26th ACP-EU parliamentary meeting in the capital Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
She is coordinator and spokesperson of the foreign affairs committee for
her political group, the Social-Democrat. With 200 members the
Social-Democrat is the second largest group within the European
Parliament. For Ethiopia and Ethiopians though Ana Gomes is best
remembered for her role as the leader of the EU election observers’
team during the 2005 crisis-induced general election in Ethiopia. She
has had a troubled relationship with Ethiopia’s late Prime Minister
Meles Zenawi, who she still calls “a dictator,” after she
published her report in which wrote the election was massively
rigged. Her arrival in Addis Ababa caught many, who thought she would never
be allowed to set foot in Ethiopia, by a surprise. Addis Standard’s
deputy-editor-in-chief Tesfaye Ejigu met Ana Gomes during the meeting
and held an exclusive interview. She discussed issues

Appeal: Eskinder Nega & Reeyot Alemu, Nominees for 2013 Sakharov Prize, seek donations to fund human rights case
Eskinder
Nega and Reeyot Alemu are Ethiopian journalists who have been awarded
the UNESCO
World Press Freedom Award and nominated for the 2013
Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought for their journalistic
work.
The
Ethiopian government, however, has been less appreciative of their
journalism – which criticised government policy on issues such as
poverty, minority rights and mismanagement of funds on large
government projects – and has imprisoned them as “terrorists”.
Eskinder Nega is serving an 18 year prison sentence for writing an
article that posed the question, Could
an Arab Spring-like movement take place in Ethiopia?
Reeyot Alemu is a teacher and a freelance journalist, sentenced to 5
years in prison for various articles in which she questioned
government policy. Their sentences have been confirmed by the highest
courts of appeal in Ethiopia.
The
London-based Media Legal
Defence Initiative, has joined forces with DC-based Freedom
Now and appealed
their case to the African Commission of Human Rights. They have
filed a brief arguing that Reeyot and Eskinder’s case is emblematic
of a wider pattern of repression of the independent media in Ethiopia
– since the 2009 Anti-Terrorism Proclamation was adopted, at least
15 journalists have been prosecuted for ‘terrorism’ and over 14
news outlets have been shut down – and that the matter is declared
a systematic violation of the rights of independent journalists in
Ethiopia.
MLDI’s
legal team, which includes Korieh Duodu alongside MLDI’s Nani
Jansen and Patrick Griffiths for Freedom now, give their time pro
bono – but they are seeking funding to cover costs before the
African Commission and Court of Human Rights. There will be
significant expenditure in attending hearings, translating numerous
legal documents and other court-related expenses.
MLDI
is asking for donations to help cover these costs and has started an
appeal for donations on a new crowdfunding website for independent
media, http://indievoic.es/index.php.
As little as $25 will help make a difference. Please give generously.

Saudi-Arabia, #1 Freedom-Expression's Predator
To
show how some predators of freedom of expression really think, Reporters Without Borders - one of the biggest freedom of expression watchdog- have presented their
innermost thoughts in the first person. They had to use a little
imagination, of course, but the facts alluded to conform to reality. Here's one of their well-thought and sarcastic depiction of Saudi-Arabia's King Abdullah ibn Abdulaziz Al-Saud. Enjoy!

Kebour Ghenna of Ethiopia Tells Oil-Reach Saudi Monarchs, Change is Inevitable!
Kebour Ghenna, Ethiopia's entrepreneur and businessman Op-ed his brutal critic on the Ethiopian business weekly CapitalEthiopia, concerning the recent crackdown on the so-called "illegal" migrant workers especially Ethiopians by Saudi government and its disgruntled youth. IOM aids over 21,000 Ethiopian returnees from Saudi Arabia
IOM
Ethiopia has assisted over 21,000 Ethiopian returnees arriving home
on Ethiopian government charter flights from the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia (KSA) over the past 12 days, following a KSA crackdown on
undocumented migrants.
Ethiopia began bringing migrant workers home from the KSA on November 13th. It is now flying up to 12 charters a day from the KSA to Addis Ababa.
Four processing points have been set up by the government, with support from IOM, to assist the returnees. IOM provides them with overnight accommodation, food, water, shoes and money for transport to their places of origin.

Infographics about Global Ethiopians' Demonstration against Saudi's Brutality
The protest started in the Saudi-Arabia on November 9/2013, a hell on earth for many migrant workers, by Ethiopians who resisted Saudi's police brutality who inflicted an imaginable pain. This sparked a global protest by Ethiopians around the globe to urge Saudi authorities to stop such gross human right abuses, killings and rape against helpless and defenseless migrant workers with the pretext of regularizing "illegal" migrants workers in that country. Ethiopians from Edmonton, Canada to Soul, South Korea; from Melbourne, Australia to Washington D.C., USA; from Addis Abeba to London, UK went to the streets of their respective cities to express their outrage. So far, roughly thirty thousand Ethiopians and origin of Ethiopians have participated, the majority, obviously in North America. November 18/2013 was the largest crowd recorded, nearly ten thousands Ethiopians in various countries around the world said LOUD & CLEAR to stop Saudi-Arabia its barbaric practices against Ethiopians. Ironically, hundreds of our compatriots in Ethiopia, who tried to show their solidarity with fellow suffering citizens in Saudi-Arabia, were beaten and then arrested by the ruling TPLF. However, Ethiopians who live abroad vowed to go and make noise at Saudi Embassies everywhere in the world until that country stops its crimes.

Ethiopian Migrants Victimized in Saudi Arabia (GRAHAM PEEBLES)
In
the last 10 days persecution of Ethiopian migrant workers in Saudi
Arabia has escalated. Men and women are forced from their homes by
mobs of civilians and dragged through the streets of Riyadh and
Jeddah. Distressing videos of Ethiopian men being mercilessly beaten,
kicked and punched have circulated the Internet and triggered
worldwide protests by members of the Ethiopian diaspora as well as
outraged civilians in Ethiopia. Women report being raped, many
repeatedly, by vigilantes and Saudi police. Ethiopian Satellite

TPLF shuts down Ethiopia's Consulate in Riyadh when Desperate Citizens Needs It More
Saudi-Arabia, one of the major destinations for millions of desperate migrant workers from Asia and Africa, intensified its war against Ethiopians over the past weeks. Saudi's security police and the Shabab (youth) vigilantes are on rampage killing, torturing, raping, imprisoning and starving these helpless and defenseless Ethiopians. Large numbers of Ethiopians were killed, kidnapped, tortured and unaccounted for over the couple of days, since the Saudi government started rounding off undocumented migrant workers. Against this background Ethiopia's Riyadh consulate announced yesterday that it was shut down indefinitely. This is how much the rulers at Arat killo Palace cared and concerned about their powerless nationals whose safety and security is at stake. Thousands of these compatriots lack papers to stay in Saudi and/or repatriate back home; the consulate added salt to their wounds by abandoning
them in the hands of heartless and barbaric Saudi police and its
militia. If this is not treason, then what would be? The women in the
following video were kidnapped and are being gang-raped by twenty Saudi men who killed their

Ethiopians in Sweden outraged over Violence against Migrant Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia
Over
300 Ethiopians who reside in Sweden went to street today here in
Stockholm, to express their anger and sadness over the recent
killings, rape and arbitrary detention of migrant Ethiopians in Saudi
Arabia. The 2 hours protest took place in front the Saudi Embassy in
the afternoon and the demonstrators urged the Saudi government to
stop the unprecedented violence and abuse which mainly target
innocent Ethiopian migrant workers in that country. The protesters
were chanting slogans such as 'shame on you'; 'we need justice';
'stop raping our sisters'; 'stop killing our sisters and brothers'
among others. Saudi Embassy officials refused to accept a letter
which was prepared by the organizers to be submitted to the Saudi
King. Ethiopians who allegedly don't have residence/work permit have
been rounded up and are now concentrated in the desert. The atrocity
against Ethiopians detained in different concentration camps in Saudi
Arabia has been going on for the past five days by security
authorities and vigilantes who took the law into their hands. Two
Ethiopians have been allegedly killed yesterday during a scuffle of
separating a husband and wife. The Ethiopian government which is supposed to protect the security and safety of Ethiopians at home and abroad has done little or nothing to stop the ongoing violence against its thousands of citizens in the middle-eastern countries. Even though, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed the violence against Ethiopians toned down after discussion with its Saudi counterparts, Ethiopians who reside in the petrol-rich country refuted this claim as baseless and intended to repair the damage. Some of these Ethiopians who are themselves in the various concentration camps in Saudi deserts told Ethiopian Satellite TV (ESAT) that, neither the government nor the Ethiopian Embassy in Saudi doing nothing to rescue their lives and bring them home safely.

Serkalem Fasil's heart-breaking letter to her jailed husband Journalist Eskinder Nega
Prologue
Dear
readers, especially those fans of Eskinder Nega and other thousands
of Ethiopian prisoners of conscience. I listened on Friday morning,
this heart wrenching, powerful, inspiring and genuine letter written
and read by Nega's wife from exile in the USA. I was weeping like a
baby while I was typing/transcribing her original letter written in
Amharic ( Ethiopia's official language) by this courageous
woman to her jailed husband who is serving 18 years of jail term at the
notorious Kality prison, at the outskirts the capital Addis Abeba.
Can you imagine saying goodbye for good to your loved one by just
locking your fingers and with a few words? No hugging, no kissing, not
even shaking hands. That is how Sirkalem and their Son Nafkot
departed from Eskinder Nega; we take so many things in life for
granted. Against this background, another Ethiopian journalist who
had claimed 2 years ago being targeted by government authorities,
returned back home saying 'he realized that he made a bad decision two
years ago'. Ethiopia, is just a land of paradox; a mother for one and
step-mother for the other.
